What's IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is your ticket to studying, working, or living in English-speaking countries. Trusted by over 10,000 organizations worldwide, it’s the gold standard for English proficiency.

Types of IELTS

There are two main types of IELTS tests, each designed for different purposes

IELTS Academic

Purpose: Ideal for those applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.

Content: Includes topics suitable for anyone entering undergraduate or postgraduate studies. The Academic Writing Task 1 involves describing visual information, like graphs and charts.

IELTS General Training

Purpose: Suitable for those going to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience, or training programs. It’s also required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.

Content:: Focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. The Writing Task 1 involves writing a letter.

Both versions test the four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, the Reading and Writing sections differ between Academic and General Training.

Test Structure

The TOEFL test is meticulously designed to evaluate your English skills through four distinct sections:

1

Listening (30 minutes):

  • Format: Tune into 3-4 academic lectures and 2-3 conversations.
  • Tasks: Answer questions that gauge your grasp of main ideas, details, speaker intentions, and attitudes.
2

Reading (60 minutes):

  • Format: Three sections with a variety of tasks.
  • Tasks: Multiple-choice, identifying information, matching, and short-answer questions.
3

Writing (60 minutes):

  • Task 1: Describe visual information in at least 150 words (Academic) or write a letter (General Training).
  • Task 2: Write an essay of at least 250 words.
4

Speaking (11–14 minutes):

  • Format: A face-to-face interview.
  • Parts: Introduction, individual long turn, and two-way discussion.

Scoring Details

The IELTS uses a 9-band scale to measure your proficiency, from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user). Each section is scored separately and then averaged for an overall band score.
