Version It has only one version. Available in two versions: Academic and General Training. Both are taken for different purposes. Academic is for further studies. General is for non-academic.
Format Primarily computer-based (TOEFL iBT), though paper-based versions exist in some locations. Both are offered in paper-based and computer-based formats.
Speaking Test In front of a computer. No human involved. Conducted face-to-face with an examiner.
Duration About 1 hour and 57 minutes. About 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Content Emphasizes academic English. IELTS Academic is geared towards higher education.
Content - Reading Texts and lectures are academic in nature. Academic texts for IELTS Academic. General texts for IELTS General Training.
Content - Writing Integrated tasks that require synthesis of information from reading and listening sections. IELTS Academic includes tasks describing visual information and presenting arguments or solving problems. IELTS General Training includes letter writing and an essay.
Content - Speaking Integrated tasks that require synthesis of information from reading and listening sections. Questions and answers about day-to-day life ideas and situations. Also includes a 2-min speech.
Content - Listening Texts and lectures are academic in nature. Routine conversations and academic lectures.
Scoring Each section is scored out of 30 with a total score of 120. Scores are reported as a total and by section. Each section is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. The overall score is an average of the four sections.
Test Availability Offered more frequently with multiple test dates available throughout the year. Test dates may be less frequent and availability can vary by location.
Test Locations Available at numerous locations worldwide, mostly computer-based. Offered globally with both paper-based and computer-based options available.
Preference Students who are comfortable with US English prefer TOEFL. (Example: "Color") Students who are comfortable with UK English prefer IELTS. (Example: "Colour")
